Menage A Trois Silk Soft Red Blend 2015

This one is a blend of Pinot Noir (70%), Malbec (20%) and Petit Sirah (10%).

From the winemaker:  “Lose yourself in the sensual pleasures of Ménage à Trois Silk—a smooth, seductive red blend that caresses you with every sip. With its bright, red ruby hue in the glass and alluring fragrance of dried violets and berries, Silk beckons, promising an unforgettable experience. Succulent cherry and ripe raspberry flavors mingle with delicate hints of rose petals and toasty spice, and glide gracefully across your palate like liquid silk. Seamless and lustrous, Silk is the lavish, luxurious encounter you’ve been craving.”

14 Hands Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH AWARD (JUL 2017)  learn more

PICK OF THE WEEK  learn more

14 Hands wines are inspired by the unbridled spirit of the wild horses that once freely roamed eastern Washington.

Though Labelled as a Cab, this one is technically a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 8% other varieties including Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Petite Syrah

From the Winemaker: “Rich, juicy red that features aromas of dark cherry, black currant, coffee and subtle hints of spice. These flavors are complemented by a touch of spicy oak and emphasized by refined tannins”

LABEL

Bright, fresh, cool and engaging.  Really draws you in.

COLOR

Rich Dark red

AROMA

On the nose I got some nice dark fruits (mainly cherries) and a bit of orange peel

TASTE

On the palate, more dark fruits, cherries, plums and small hint of spice.

PAIRING

Pair with grilled red meats, ribs, meat sauced pastas.

PRICE (VALUE)

At around $9 this is an excellent wine for the money

THE BOTTOM LINE

I really enjoyed this Cab. At around $9 you’ll be hard pressed to find anything as good on the market at this price point.

We are naming it our “Diamond in the Rough” Winner for July.  It will also be our Pick of the Week selection this week and will grace our monthly Best Under $10 List.  Pick one up today.  I heard they only made 850,000 cases!

The Velvet Devil 2014

Picked this one up on sale the other day at my local wine store completly on a whim.  I’m always fascinated by wines from this part of the country.

From the winemaker:  “Balanced, rich and explosive. Think red plums and bittersweet cocoa with hints of smoke and cedar. So smooth, so naughty, and so very, very nice.”

LABEL

Fun and eye catching.  Simple design yet with the big bold fonts and the pitch fork draws you in for a look

COLOR

Nice rich purple

AROMA

Lots of dark fruit on the nose very faint hint of chocolate

TASTE

I’d call this one medium bodied and not full as the wine maker may suggest.  Decently rounded with a medium finish

PAIRING

Good with rich tomato based dishes, stews, pizza, pastas, bbq

PRICE (VALUE)

At around $12 a well enough constructed Merlot for your dollar.

THE BOTTOM LINE

It’s a respectable Merlot but not a brilliant Merlot.  At around $12, it’s a good value. If you’re in the Market for a Merlot from Washington State give this one a try!

Smoking Loon Pinot Noir 2011

Smoking Loon wines are crafted on the premise that good wine shouldn’t have to take themselves so seriously.   Per the winemaker, they get their name from Don Sebastiani’s love of cigars and his father August’s passion for water fowl (I believe loons/ducks fall into this category)

This one happens to be one of my wife’s favorites under $10.  She used to call it Smokin’ Lion (long story)  No wonder I could never find this thing in the aisles.  Screams value buy!

LABEL

Simple, clean looking.  Love the cool looking smoking loon somewhat hidden in the design.

COLOR

Nice Ligh Purple.

AROMA

Brigh fruity aroma of raspberries, strawberries, and cranberries.

TASTE

Light finish, red fruit with a little spice.

PRICE (VALUE)

At around $9, this one screams value.

PAIRING

It’s a casual, light everyday wine.  Pair it with everyday fare like Pizza, Burgers, Pastas, BBQ, Chinese Food (Yea I said it)

THE BOTTOM LINE

At a price point of about $9 per bottle you really can’t go wrong with this medium bodied wine. It’s consistant and goes with almost anything you throw at it!

Cline Ancient Vines Zinfandel 2011

PICK OF THE WEEK

So what exactly are ancient vines anyways? According to the winemaker Cline Cellars they are vines on their estate that are between 80-100 years old.

92% of this blend is sourced from grapes from these vines. The general belief is that older vines, when properly handled will produce a better wine.

LABEL

Clean, minimalistic. Doesn’t exactly scream “buy me!” There’s also a cool little recipe flip on the back for a PF Chang Ginger Plum Zin sauce.

COLOR

Ruby red.

AROMA

Cherry, vanilla and strawberry on the nose.

TASTE

Full bodied, elegant and smooth with a nice long finish.

PRICE (VALUE)

I’ve seen this wine retail for up to $16. At around $13 here in Miami, you can’t go wrong.

PAIRING

Roasted Meats, light tomato sauced based dishes.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Tremendous value and quality. Pick one up today, you will enjoy it!
